Democrats proved to have made a huge mistake when they thought that a former Saturday Night Live comedian of all people would be qualified to serve in the U.S. Senate. At first, it looked like their decision to win cheap votes by pushing Al Franken into the Senate was a smart one, as the actor was effective at communicating the Democratic party’s talking points during hearings.
However, the Democrats should have known that this Hollywood celebrity would come with no shortage of baggage. Following a second accusation of sexual harassment against the disgraced Senator, a movement is picking up steam within the left to replace Franken with someone else to represent Minnesota in the Senate.
No less than fellow leftist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and his supporters have begun the call to have Franken step down. A group of Sanders campaign staffers called Justice Democrats have started a petition demanding that he resign.
Said the group’s executive director Saikat Chakrabarti in a statement, “Franken must go. We do not tolerate those who abuse their power.” Unfortunately, the person they have in mind to replace Franken with is not much of an improvement. Stated Chakrabarti, “Representative Keith Ellison has a proven track record of integrity and fighting for progressive principles.”
Many top Democrats within Minnesota want Franken to go. Said Minnesota state auditor Rebecca Otto, “Al Franken is my friend, but we can’t have a double standard.” Added Megan Thomas, who is president of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, “No one should fear their elected representatives, so, sadly, for me, I think the Senator should resign.” Do you think sexual assaulter Al Franken needs to be replaced?
